Kim Upsher is the forgotten girlfriend of Prince.
Prince and Kim, the two former lovebirds attended the Minneapolis Central High School together. She also had a small role in ‘Purple Rain’ back in the day. Although many fans knew of how hard prince took Vanity’s passing, due to the fact that he spoke publicly about it, according to Jill Jones, his major heartbreak was due to Kim’s death.
I’m so alone / And brokenhearted / It ain’t like my life is ended / But more like it never started / I spend my nights just a-crying / And i spend my days just a-trying / To find that love to call my own. »
Although Kim had broken up with Prince decades ago, they remained friends throughout their lives.
Kim passed away from a brain aneurysm on Nov. 15, 2015. Exactly three months later Vanity.

Denise Matthews aka Vanity’s relationship with Prince lasted three years, from 1980 to 1983. In 1982, Prince helped launch her singing and acting career as the lead singer of « Vanity 6 ». 👉 Check out this Denise interview on Letterman in 1985. Cute.

He Wanted Vanity To Be Known As « Vagina »
Prince wanted her to go by the stage name Vagina – pronounced « va-geena » – but she refused, and went with Vanity instead. The group was called Vanity 6 because among the three members, there were six breasts.
They released 🎶 Nasty Girl the same year (Sept. 24, 1982). Vanity helped script ‘Purple Rain’ and was initially slated to play the female lead, a role inspired in part by her own life story. However, the couple split before filming began (11/1/1983), and the role eventually went to Apollonia Kotero. They ended their relationship possibly because he began dating US singer Susannah Melvoin.

Susannah Melvoin might be the inspiration behind hit single 🎶 Nothing Compares 2 U which was famously sung by Sinéad O’Connor. The pair became engaged but never married. Prince was deeply in love with Susannah Melvoin, the twin sister of Revolution guitarist Wendy Melvoin, through much of the mid-’80s.
This Woman Inspired Many Of His Best Songs
His tortured romance with her, complicated largely by his philandering, was the basis for some of his best ballads, including The Beautiful Ones, Nothing Compares 2 U, and Forever In My Life. When they broke up for good, Prince recorded a song called Wally, in which he confided his most intense thoughts about Melvoin to his bodyguard and dancer Wally Safford. That song has only been heard by Prince’s engineer Susan Rogers and was deleted immediately after it was first recorded, but was recorded a second time for posterity.

Prince dated Apollonia Kotero from 1983 to 1984, his ‘Purple Rain’ co-star. After Vanity left the project, her role was offered to Jennifer Beals of Flashdance — but she turned it down because she wanted to go to college. Apollonia has always insisted that she and Prince were « never in a relationship ». They were just « business partners », she claimed on Dec. 3, 1984 on Letterman.
No doubt, Prince was a fair « business partner » of hers. Mytho!

He Did The « Batman » Soundtrack Because He Had A Crush On Kim Basinger
Tim Burton had originally planned for the Batman soundtrack to be split between Prince and Michael Jackson, with the former providing funk tracks and the latter singing ballads. Prince ended up recording an entire album’s worth of material after meeting and falling for lead actress Kim Basinger. He cancelled a Japanese tour to get to work on the material in an attempt to impress her. Shortly after the soundtrack was released, he produced an album called A Hollywood Affair featuring Basinger, but the record was scrapped, mainly because she wasn’t a very good singer.
Tara Leigh Patrick aka Carmen Electra and her career were hugely influenced by Prince, who told her, « You’re not a Tara. You’re not Tara. You’re Carmen. » They dated shortly in the early 90s. The two lovers ended up splitting due to geographical conflicts: Hollywood was Carmen’s dream, and moved timely to Los Angeles. Prince was flourishing as a musician in Minneapolis. They were on two separate ways.

He Met His Wife Via Videotape
Mayte Garcia’s mother, a die-hard Prince fan, insisted that her daughter send videotapes of her belly dance routine to Prince when she was only a teenager. The two met when she was 16, and Prince would later say that he fell in love with her on first sight. He began a long-distance courtship with Garcia with the hope of seducing her by the time she turned 18. They wrote letters to one another regularly, and he would give her tapes of new music, and she would send him videos of her dancing to it. She eventually moved to Minneapolis and became a dancer for his Diamonds and Pearls tour. More>>.

He Intended To Release An Entire Album As A Woman
Prince developed a feminine alter ego known as Camille while working on Sign O The Times. He used the persona on the single « If I Was Your Girlfriend, » and achieved the effect by slowing down the tape as he sang in his normal register, and then speeding the tape up in playback. He reportedly recorded an entire album as Camille, but eventually scrapped it along with plans to film a movie about the character in which he’d play himself as well as appear in drag as Camille.

Long-time Prince photographer and friend Randee St. Nicholas was the photographer behind Prince during 25 years. The American talented woman is not known as Prince’s girlfriend. She holds however the record for the longest collaboration with the music icon.
He Thought ‘The Black Album’ Was Evil
Prince insisted that The ‘Black Album’, his heavy funk follow-up to ‘Sign O’ The Times’, be recalled and cancelled a week before its release date in 1987 because he reportedly became convinced that the record was a work of the devil. He explained this decision rather obliquely in the Lovesexy tour program. Writing as Camille, he explained that the record was designed to « silence his critics, » but he eventually realized that he had allowed « the dark side of him to create something evil. » The ‘Black Album’ was heavily bootlegged and was eventually released in 1994.
Off-topic. Who cares? I can’t help but share with U this amazing version of 17 Days recorded live @ the LA Forum, on April 28, 2011. For those who have not had the opportunity to see him onstage, and for all the lucky basturds, we wish U a joyful and happy listening!
Called you yesterday
You didn’t answer your phone
The main drag is knowing that
You probably weren’t alone
So here I sit in my lonely room
Lookin’ for my sunshine But all I’ve got is two cigarettes And this broken heart of mine
So let the rain come down The rain come down The rain come down, down (x2)
